Hills LibrariesStirling, Woodside, Gumeracha and Mount Barker libraries have a wide selection of books and DVDs on climate change and sustainable living. Any books and DVDs not held at individual libraries can usually be obtained on request from the state library system – just ask! Two films on DVD that tackle the future of climate change are ‘Changing Climate Changing Times’, a French film shot in Morocco, France and Canada, and ‘The Great Warming’, an American film narrated by Keanu Reeves and Alanis Morissette. Another DVD is ‘Growing your own heirloom vegetables: bringing CO2 down to earth’ by Clive Blazey, the man who started the Diggers Club in Victoria. ‘The green gardener: sustainable gardening in your own backyard’ is a book by Josh Byrne also giving practical solutions. For a fresh take on broad acre issues try ‘Beyond the Brink: Peter Andrews’ radical vision for a sustainable Australian landscape’ by Peter Andrews. ‘The CSIRO home energy saving handbook: how to save energy, save money and reduce your carbon footprint’ by John Wright, Peter Osman and Peter Ashworth gives lots of practical tips and ideas. Home Energy Toolkits are also available for loan through all the Hills libraries. Use these kits to help measure and save energy in your home. ‘Quarry Vision: Coal, Climate Change and the End of the Resources Boom’ by Guy Pearse is a short discussion on the future of the coal industry in Australia. Two books by Clive Hamilton are ‘Scorcher: the dirty politics of climate change’ and published this year ‘Requiem for a Species; why we resist the truth about climate change’. A book by British economist Nicholas Stern, published in 2009, is ‘A blueprint for a safer planet: how to manage climate change and create a new era of progress and prosperity’. These are insightful and thought provoking books. There are many more titles available on climate change related issues- we’ve just highlighted a few – so it’s well worth having a look.
